Rice

Rice (Oryza sativa and Oryza glaberrima) is one of the most important staple food crops in the world, feeding more than half of the global population. It belongs to the grass family Poaceae and is cultivated mainly in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Rice grows best in warm, humid environments with abundant water, making flooded paddy fields ideal for its cultivation, though upland varieties can thrive in drier areas. The plant typically reaches a height of 1–1.8 meters and produces grains encased in husks, which are later milled to produce white or brown rice, depending on the level of processing. Nutritionally, rice is rich in carbohydrates, serving as a major energy source, but it is relatively low in protein and fat. Brown rice retains more vitamins, minerals, and fiber compared to polished white rice.

There are thousands of rice varieties globally, classified broadly into indica (long-grain), japonica (short-grain), and javanica (medium-grain) types. Beyond its dietary importance, rice holds deep cultural, economic, and social significance in many countries, particularly in Asia, where it plays a central role in cuisine, rituals, and traditions. Advances in rice breeding and biotechnology have led to high-yield, pest-resistant, and climate-tolerant varieties, helping ensure food security in the face of global population growth and changing climate conditions.
