Cardamom

Cardamom, often referred to as the “Queen of Spices,” is a highly aromatic spice derived from the seeds of plants belonging to the genus Elettaria and Amomum in the Zingiberaceae (ginger) family. Native to the tropical forests of southern India and Sri Lanka, cardamom has been prized for centuries for its distinctive fragrance, warm flavor, and numerous medicinal properties. The two main types are green cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), known for its sweet, delicate aroma and common use in desserts and beverages, and black cardamom (Amomum subulatum), which has a stronger, smokier flavor suited to savory dishes. The spice is obtained by drying the small seed pods, which contain tiny black seeds rich in essential oils such as cineole, terpinene, and limonene, responsible for its unique scent and therapeutic benefits.

Nutritionally, cardamom contains vitamins like vitamin C, riboflavin, and niacin, along with minerals such as calcium, iron, and magnesium. Its essential oils stimulate digestive enzymes and may help detoxify the body. Because of its high oil content, cardamom should be stored in airtight containers away from light and humidity to preserve its fragrance. Beyond the kitchen, cardamom is used in perfumes, chewing gums, and herbal medicines, making it one of the world’s most valuable and versatile spices—cherished for both its sensory appeal and its health-promoting qualities.
